CIRB is a nonprofit research center established in 1974 to provide statistical information on the California building and construction industry. It is funded by grants from construction industry advancement funds, member subscriptions and the sale of reports and data. The most prominent data collected by CIRB is California building permit information, which is collected monthly from more than 525 California cities and counties. CIRB draws its data from proprietary databases that it has created. The data are updated daily and used to accommodate custom information requests. Additionally, CIRB assembles and reports public works data each month. Hundreds of regular subscribers receive the California Construction Review and California Public Works Construction.

Over three decades, CIRB has produced hundreds of major research reports and responded to more than 100,000 individual information requests. CIRB data and reports represent the foundational information for industry analysts, economists, government, industry and financial analysts seeking to identify trends and other important indicators.

Throughout its history, CIRB has remained on the leading edge of construction industry data. For example, in 1996, when the Bureau of the Census eliminated the collection of nonresidential building permit data, CIRB expanded to begin collecting this important information from California’s cities and counties. This prevented the loss of data crucial to an important segment of the state’s economy. As a result, CIRB is today the only source of comprehensive data on private nonresidential building permit data.

In 2007, CIRB became a part of the Building Industry Association of Southern California. This new and dynamic relationship ensures that the Board will have the resources necessary to continue providing the latest industry information and analysis for decades to come. In addition to CIRB, the Building Industry Association of Southern California also supports www.ModelHomeTour.org, a consumer resource for new homes in Southern California as well as www.BuildingIndustryShow.com, Southern California's leading building industry trade show and exposition.
